Trash/Recycling Collections

Rules

In order for refuse to be collected on a weekly schedule by the City of Pawtucket Department of Public Works, the following rules shall apply:

  1. Loose garbage will not be collected. All residential solid waste should be placed in plastic bags and placed inside the City-issued trash barrels. No loose trash should be placed on the curb.  City-issued trash barrels must be placed on the curb in front of each residence, not before 4:00 p.m. the day before collection. No containers shall be placed in or on the street.
  2. Yard Waste will be collected on trash collection day.  It must be separate from the regular trash.  Yard waste consists of grass, tree branches, leaves and plants.  Tree branches must be no larger than three (3) inches in diameter and no longer than three (3) feet in length, and tied in small bundles. Yard waste must be placed in composting bags or in barrels marked yard waste.  PLASTIC BAGS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.  Yard Waste will be picked up from beginning in April until a date set in December by the Director of Public Work. This date is established prior to the start of the calendar year.
  3. Cardboard must be separated from the trash to be recycled. Trash placed in cardboard will not be accepted.
  4. Rugs.  Smaller rugs (5’ x 7’ or smaller) may be cut and placed in the City-issued trash barrel.  Larger rugs (greater than 5’ x 7’) will be considered construction materials and can be disposed of at the transfer station. Please refer to this sheet for pricing.
  5. No sand, dirt, sod, rocks, demolition lumber, broken concrete, asphalt, plaster, tile, brick, toilets, tubs, vanities, cabinets or other construction material will be collected should be placed in the City-issued barrels.  These items will not be collected
  6. No automobile or motorcycle parts should be placed in the City-issued barrels.  These items will not be collected.
  7. No frozen containers or containers with warm ashes should be placed in the City-issued barrels.  These items will not be collected.
  8. No uncooked animal carcass or parts should be placed in the City-issued barrels.  These items will not be collected.
  9. Metal items must be scheduled for pickup by the owner of the property through the Department of Public Works. Please call 401-728-0500 ext.233 to schedule these collections.
  10. There is a $16.00 charge for refrigerators, freezers, mattresses, and box springs. There is no charge for stoves, washers, dryers, air conditioners (limit 2 per year, additional air conditioners shall be $16 per unit), water coolers, or televisions. All of these items must be scheduled for pickup by the owner of the property before putting them on the curbside. Please call 401-728-0500 ext. 233 to schedule these collections.
  11. Propane tanks may be disposed of at the Transfer Station, 240 Grotto Avenue, Pawtucket. Tanks 20lbs or less are free for disposal and over 20lbs will be $22.00.
  12. Furniture must be scheduled for pickup with the Department of Public Works.  Resident will be allowed to place three (3) pieces of furniture out per week.  Please call 401-728-0500 ext. 233 to schedule these collections. As of January 2nd, 2024, love seats, couchs, sectional couches (up to 3 piece sectionals), kitchen tables, and up to 6 chairs will be $10 each.
  13. No full paint cans. Latex paint cans should be placed with the cover off in the regular trash after the paint has dried. Oil paint can be disposed of by calling the Eco Depot at (401) 942-1430. Call for the location of drop-off sites.
  14. All dogs must be leashed, restrained or fenced in on the day of collection.
  15. Receptacles so stored shall be screened by fencing or shrubbery if visible from the street.
  16. Properties managed by private companies shall be responsible for all bulky waste pick up and disposal from that property.
  17. The City hereby incorporates by reference the Rules of the RI Resource Recovery Corporation and future amendments thereof.
